This summer the WGRC welcomed Mark Marchetti as an REU student as part of the K-State Plant Pathology Summer Program. The REU program is a U.S. National Science Foundation funded project that supports intensive research by undergraduate students. Mark is a sophomore at Texas A&M studying agronomy, and at the WGRC, he learned about wheat production and assisted with trait rating and field activities. Mark also learned laboratory techniques like DNA extraction, PCR, and the GISH microscopy technique. Mark also had a summer project where he evaluated Kansas adapted wheat lines containing introgressions from the wild wheat relatives Aegilops speltoides and Dasypyrum villosum for resistance to wheat stem rust. This work resulted in the identification of some potentially new sources of stem rust resistance that the WGRC will study further.
