Root System Architecture Trait Discovery in Wild Relative Introgression Germplasm
Project Summary:
Root system architecture (RSA) traits can improve wheat performance in drought prone environments and represent vital targets for breeding. This project will screen novel WGRC wild relative introgression lines (ILs) for root system architecture (RSA), root hair (RH) traits, and coleoptile length. Rapid, high-throughput (HTP) screening methods using AI-based image processing pipelines will be used to phenotype hundreds of ILs. The effects of contrasting RSA traits on wheat growth, physiology, and yield will be evaluated in field drought-stress trials. The project will identify novel root system ideotypes for improving drought tolerance in wheat breeding programs.
