Bernd Friebe

Bernd FriebeBernd received his PhD in 1977 and Dr. of Science in 1986 from the Free University in Berlin, Germany. After working at the University of Munich/Weihenstephan and a post doc appointment at the University of Manitoba/Winnipeg, Bernd joined the Wheat Genetic Resources Center at Kansas State University in 1991. Bernd is interested in the management and characterization of wild wheat genetic resources and their use in wheat improvement. Specific projects are aimed at: transferring virus resistance from wheat relatives to bread wheat, improving the beta glucan content of bread wheat by introducing genes from barley for developing heart healthy food, and developing novel and more effective strategies for increasing recombination between wheat and wheat relative chromosomes.
